Working with retail or restaurant brands requires matching and using a brand color palette on many different aspects of your project. It will likely also require working with that same color palette on many different substrates, in different environments. When it comes to metal substrates (aluminum, steel etc.) then powder coated has got it covered. And it’s not just because it has an improved sustainability footprint compared to liquid paint.
People often think that powder coating is one product – “just get it powder coated”. Yes, you can powder coat metal substrates, but aside from adding color to the part, what else do you need from that coating?
- Weatherability (protection from color or gloss fade, especially outdoors)
- Scratch resistance
- Chemical resistance
- Corrosion protection
The list goes on. With all these different product performance requirements, it should come as no surprise that there are different types of powder coatings. That will deliver the performance needed.

Take Subway. One of the many restaurant/retail brands that we have worked with. We all recognize the yellow and green, then of course there are the other more neutral colors in the store we don’t notice as much but are just as important. We matched the whole color palette in a variety of product types; exterior level coatings for storefront, windows and signage that need protection from color and gloss fade; interior coatings that need to look good, won’t face much weathering, but will still be bumped (bags, keys, umbrellas, kids etc.) so need good scratch resistance; and even coatings that don’t need any weathering protection as they’re unlikely to ever see the light of day, but will be wiped with chemical cleaners regularly.
