Color trends 2019/20
The 2019/20 color trends are here!
It’s so much fun looking at trends and color trends. Every year we sit down and get to “trend” work. We trawl through information on trends, fashion, art, architecture, design and look at the world around us and what we see happening. We’re also looking at color, talking to our color labs and experts, reviewing all those same areas for color. The result? Four trends that we think are relevant now, each with it’s own individual color palette. They’re gorgeous colors available in Polychem powder coatings – our sister brand known for flexibility, thousands of colors, and color matching!

Remember when you got what you’re given? When everyone got the same experience? Not so much anymore. Our ability to drill down, get details and get personalized is on the up. And up. A prime example? The personalized subscription business. In the last few years this has more than tripled, and has been led by smaller start ups. No matter whether it’s make up, clothing, food, drinks, a personally curated selection sent straight to your door is popular. And with Millennials and even Gen Z a major consumption group, companies are innovating to keep up. Likewise, internally companies are having to keep up, with workplace culture slowly changing to reflect Millennial values. Personalization is actually evident across all of our trends – that’s why it's first – so see where else you can see elements of this trend coming through.

The Future is here
We have so many ways to get away from it all now, and of course a greater need to get away! We spend so much time interacting with some form of media and while, connectivity and the increasing number of digital experiences are not new trends, as Augmented Reality (AR) gets more real, they’re reaching new levels of reality and accessibility. We enhance our everyday lives, every day, from graphics, and filters, to sounds and GPS data – all are being used to enhance and improve are experience of ‘reality’.
As well as AR, AI – Artificial Intelligence - is also a big trend. There have been movies where AI was a thing of the future, now it’s in movies as a thing of now.
The techlash of 2018 also contributes and has many facets. Until recently it almost seemed like tech companies could do no wrong. Now outrage over data and privacy has lead to privacy laws with global impact. The result? We now expect what one trend report is calling superhuman resources; Artificial Intelligence and algorithms that are unbiased, demonstrate equality and are what we deem fair.

All’s well…
The idea of being fit, healthy and happy isn’t new. Nor even is the idea of wellness (see our 2016 trend Health to Happiness) but it is also a trend that simply keeps growing. Now a holistic approach to pain management – not just for relaxation - has begun to become mainstream. Recovery fitness has also become popular. Millennials and Gen Z, used to tracking their fitness and all around well being on apps, led the charge, and other demographics are following suit.
It will come as no surprise that technology is also playing a part. Despite the backlash against tech companies over the last year, wellness seekers increasingly turn to tech firms to help them manage their holistic approach. Human wellness is being viewed as an engineering problem to be solved and personalized solutions are at the forefront.

One for all
Expectations are changing, social expectations are changing, awareness is changing, empowerment is changing. Our expectations, our understanding, our desire to be kind and our ability to accept are taking many forms. At a very basic level, technology has democratized the arts and fashion, and fashion has always reflected societal changes. When women gained the right to vote, hemlines went up and in turn, miniskirts quickly became a symbol of the sexual revolution.
It’s perhaps not surprising then that gender neutral fashion has made a big impact, with headline grabbing stories of male students in the UK wearing skirts to school every day during a hot summer also making global news. Add to this the empowerment movement and you can really see a shift. Sex sells right? Well, not any more. Today, female empowerment sells more.
Delivering and meeting our new social and empowered expectations is becoming mainstream, and we want sustainable, ethical, equal brands as a result. There’s also a move from just sustainability to social awareness. Being sustainable isn’t enough anymore – it’s expected as a basic requirement - so a demand for open source solutions is brewing.

With these trends come our color palettes. There’s a lot of optimism – despite the techlash, and perhaps after the disruption of 2016 and 17 – so you will notice a lot of warm toned hues with orange, red and yellow bases. Even our neutrals have a softer tone, and many of the colors retain a soft, muted look. There’s definitely a sense of fun, personalization and individuality in some of these trends too. Enjoy and let us know what you think!
